It’s one of those things that seems like every time we look at a new piece of art, something new seems to emerge.
It’s easy to feel as if we’ve lost something special with our obsession with the dream state, but in fact, it’s all about getting back to basics.
“I have a very simple rule when it comes to my art: You can’t take your eyes off it,” says John Broughton, a former art student at the Royal College of Art.
“You can’t look at it and think ‘That’s it, this is it.'”
This is Broughson’s approach to his work, and it’s what he wants to share with the world.
“When I first started out, I was obsessed with everything about art, I thought I was going to be an artist,” he says.
“But then I discovered the art world and realised there were all these people making things out of wood, metal and paper and stuff, and I thought that was it.
I had no idea that there were people who were making beautiful dream stories, stories that could inspire me.”
So I started making my own stuff, using all the tools I could think of, and realised that I could do a really beautiful story out of my own imagination.
“Broughton’s work has inspired a number of artists, including Andy Warhol, who created his own artworks for the iconic wall art in the Whitney Museum.
And this week, a painting by John McPherson will be on display at the New Museum in New York City, and there are plenty of artists who are turning to the same inspiration to create their own work of art.
Here’s how to make a dream dream story.1.
Identify your dream object (or at least a dream object that you’d like to create)Before you begin, it helps to think of what you want to achieve.
For example, if you’re a creative person, you might start with an idea that’s like, ‘I want to draw a dog and make it look cute,’ or, ‘Why don’t I put my hand in a jar of water and put it into a pot and make some kind of bubble?’
Identify what you’d want your dream to look like, and then make it.2.
“So I picked up a brush and I started with water, and as I drew water, it looked really weird, so I thought, ‘Let’s see if I can do that with a brush.'””
It was really just an idea of what I would like to do with my art if I could draw it,” he explains.
“So I picked up a brush and I started with water, and as I drew water, it looked really weird, so I thought, ‘Let’s see if I can do that with a brush.'”
After about a day or two, I decided that the water would be my colour, and that’s how I started.
I drew the bubbles, and water was the main colour.
I can work from the drawing or on the computer or whatever it is that I have on the day. “
The best way to collaborate with me is through a friend or someone I know, but if I have no one, then I work on my own,” he laughs.
“I can work from the drawing or on the computer or whatever it is that I have on the day.
I try and work in my own style.”3.
Create a dream-like environmentThe next step, Boughton explains, is to create a dream environment that will allow him to see his dream objects through.
“If I can make a very dark room, that’s fine,” he jokes.
“Just make it dark enough that I can see them through the window, and make sure that I don’t look through the curtains.”
Start with a blank canvasThe next steps are much more difficult. “
In that moment, I’ll see what the colour is of the objects and then I can decide whether or not I want to use that colour.”4.
Start with a blank canvasThe next steps are much more difficult.
“My first piece of work is always going to look very, very different to what I am going to end up with after I do this,” he admits.
“For example, I can’t draw my own art because I don.
So I’ll try and find a blank piece of paper and sketch a drawing out of it.”
I’ve got a very different way of looking at it, and you have to be able to draw the drawing on that piece. “
A blank canvas, a blank drawing, that gives me a whole new way to look at the piece.
I’ve got a very different way of looking at it, and you have to be able to draw the drawing on that piece.
It gives you an idea as to what you’re going to draw, and how you’re looking at the drawing.
It has to be realistic, but it has to have something to give me that feeling of looking out of the window
